Marc Márquez and Álex Márquez secured the last two spots for the pole position battle in the MotoGP Thai GP. They finished at the top of the first qualifying session in Buriram.
After the first timed laps, Gresini had both of its riders in qualifying positions, with Álex Márquez in first and Fabio Di Giannantonio in second. Both of them lapped just below the best times from the second free practice session and maintained their positions with their second attempts.
Di Giannantonio was later overtaken by Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda) and Pol Espargaró (GasGas Tech3/KTM), who were second and third, respectively, after their first runs. After the riders returned to the pits to prepare for the final phase of the session, Raúl Fernández (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP Team/Aprilia) got the second place with three minutes left.
In the final minute, Marc Márquez and Di Giannantonio moved to first and second, respectively. At the last moment, Álex Márquez beat his brother Marc by 0.087s to finish in the lead. This pushed Di Giannantonio down to third, missing out on qualifying by just 20 thousandths of a second.
