In a challenging first year of production, the BEV3 platform has encountered its fair share of obstacles. Introduced in 2022 for the 2023 model year, the luxurious Cadillac Lyriq was the first vehicle to utilize this relatively new platform. However, it is important to note that the control arms in question were not manufactured by General Motors. Instead, they were produced by Asia-Pacific Light Alloy Technology Co., a company based in China.
Recently filed documents with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shed light on the issue. It appears that the manufacturer discovered a problem with the metal used in the control arms. Specifically, the metal was found to be contaminated, making the control arms susceptible to cracking. This raises concerns about the quality control standards in the Chinese automotive industry, where cost-cutting measures often take precedence over ensuring product safety.
Upon discovering the issue, efforts were made to contain the problem. Unfortunately, a shipment was not successfully contained, leading to further complications. General Motors was made aware of the problem through their Speak Up For Safety program, which was implemented following the ignition switch recalls a decade ago.
Following a thorough product investigation, it was determined that approximately 83 vehicles may have been produced with these suspect control arms. Specifically, the affected vehicles are the Blazer EV electric sport utility vehicles manufactured between April 9 and April 11. In response, Chevrolet dealers have been instructed to inspect and replace the right front lower control link, free of charge, if necessary.
Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notification of the recall no earlier than August 13. They can expect to receive this information via first-class mail. Alternatively, owners can visit GM’s website or the NHTSA’s portal and enter their 17-character VIN to check if their vehicle is included in the recall. It is worth noting that vehicles produced in Mexico will have identification numbers beginning with 3, while those produced in Missouri will have identification numbers beginning with 1.
Fortunately, there have been no reported incidents associated with this defect. Additionally, replacement control arms are being sourced from a different manufacturing window, ensuring that they are not affected by the same issue. The supplier responsible for producing these replacement parts is Asia-Pacific Light Alloy Technology Co., the same company that manufactured the original control arms.
Although the Blazer EV was touted as a competitor to the Tesla Model Y when it was unveiled in July 2022, it is important to clarify that it is not a direct rival. With a longer wheelbase of 121.8 inches compared to the Model Y’s 113.8 inches, the Blazer EV offers its own unique features and capabilities.
Overall, this recall serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by new platforms and the importance of rigorous quality control measures. General Motors is taking swift action to address the issue and ensure the safety of its customers.
