Qualifying at Sachsenring is complete, and with one of the usual suspects returning to pole position, none other than Jorge Martín who, once again, once again broke the record for fastest lap on the circuit, ever. Miguel Oliveira and Raúl Fernández were also at a great level, and secured the front row of the grid.
The fastest in Q1 and thus guaranteed the possibility of pole position were Raúl Fernández (1:19.678s) and Marco Bezzecchi (1:20.115s). The big absence is Marc Márquez, one of the drivers who solidified his name on the German circuit over the last decade.
After the first laps in Q2 Álex Márquez was the highlight with 1:19.900s, Maverick Viñales at 0.050s.
Times promised to change and Fernández, after his shine in Q1, was on the attack and, in effect, took the lead in the session with 1:19.643s… but for a short time: Jorge Martín, who else, was back doing his thing and he achieved a record for the fastest lap of all time, with 1:19.423s.
After the first five minutes of the session, the riders started heading to the team garages and this is how the times were:
The German circuit was experiencing the calm before the storm that promised to hit the track, with the latest attacks on the times. With just over six minutes to race, the riders returned to the track, and with mental games, waiting for a reference to follow behind.
Miguel Oliveira was attacking and on his sixth lap he set the second best time in the session, with 1:19.471s.
Moments later Maverick Viñales crashed in turn 10, and was badly affected, on his knees and having difficulty getting around. Martín also had a mishap, with a run off the track, but without any major problems.
Two minutes from the end, Martín was leading, Oliveira was second and Fernández third. Bagnaia was fourth and A. Márquez fifth.
Note also the crash of Álex Márquez, and the respective raising of the yellow flag that may have cost Bagnaia a place at the top of the grid.
Shortly after, the session ended with Martín securing pole position and the Trackhouse duo in close quarters, with Oliveira and Fernández completing the front row of the grid.
