Sarah Bovy secured her first pole position of the year for Iron Dames #85 team for the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship 2024. The Belgian driver clinched the top spot in the highly competitive LMGT3 category during qualifying, excelling in both the initial 10-minute sessions and the 12-minute Hyperpole sessions. The discussion around track limits, especially for Bronze-rated drivers in this category, was a prominent topic, with some early laps being deleted for exceeding the limits. Furthermore, tire degradation meant there were few opportunities for consecutive fast laps, leaving little room for errors regarding track limit violations.
Sarah Bovy showcased the impressive speed of the Iron Dames’ Lamborghini Huracan LMGT3 EVO2 #85 from the start of the session. Last year, she claimed three pole positions, further demonstrating her talent. While Bovy dominated the track, attention turned to drivers below the top spot as their grid positions were being determined. Giorgio Roda, driving the Ford Mustang #88 for Proton Competition, went off track, allowing Ian James to take #88 out of contention for pole position, securing P4 instead. Ryan Hardwick, driving the sister car #77, finished just behind in P12.
Another notable moment during the Hyperpole session was Arnold Robin’s debut in Hyperpole. Robin, driving the Akkodis ASP team’s Lexus RC F #78, marked the team’s debut in the WEC, as well as the first appearance of the Lexus RC F in this competition, securing the 10th position. However, the session was not without incidents. Alex Malaykhin had a dramatic accident in the Manthey Porsche 911 LMGT3.R #92, losing control of the car at the top of Radillion and spinning towards the tire barrier. This resulted in a red flag, allowing for the debris and damaged Porsche to be cleared. Malaykhin walked away unharmed from the car and was released from the medical center.
As the session resumed, Robin’s Lexus #78 encountered electronic issues, leaving the car stranded in the pitlane. The team tried to solve the problem by changing the battery to restart the engine, but they were unable to continue. United Autosports stood out as the only team with two cars, both McLaren 720S GT3 EVOs, among the top ten. Joshua Caygill in the #95 showed more promise compared to his teammate James Cottingham in the #59. In the end, Bovy secured the pole position with a time of 2:20.755 in his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 #85, closely followed by Caygill in second place, 0.377 seconds behind. Ahmed al Harthy in the WRT BMW M4 #46 finished just behind the McLaren with a lap time of 2:21.138. Yasser Shahin claimed the fourth position in the Manthey Porsche EMA #92 with a time of 2:21.285, while Cottingham completed the top five in the #59 with a time of 2:21.293. This qualifying performance marked United Autosports’ best result since the start of the 2024 season with their McLaren LMGT3 program.
