Fabio Scherer, the current LMP2 category champion in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, will join former class winner David Heinemeier-Hansson and Kyffin Simpson, champion of the 2023 European Le Mans Series, in Nielsen Racing’s team for this year’s event. Nielsen Racing officially announced their driver lineup for the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans, set to take place on June 15 and 16. The team will compete with their Oreca 07 Gibson #24 in this prestigious endurance race, marking their fourth participation.
Hansson, who currently races for Nielsen Racing in their LMP2 campaign in the ELMS, recently completed the 4 Hours of Le Castellet. On the other hand, Scherer had the opportunity to test one of the team’s Oreca 07 cars during last year’s ELMS rookie test. While Scherer competes for United Autosports in the ELMS, he will be driving for Nielsen Racing at Le Mans, where he secured his first victory with Inter Europol Competition last year.
“I am excited to return to the place that changed my career and my life,” said Scherer. “To fight for victory again at Le Mans will be an incredibly special experience. It’s not just about being in any car, but being in a competitive car. Nielsen Racing has a remarkable track record, and I am delighted to have David as my teammate. It has always been a pleasure to race alongside him during the 2022 ELMS season at Inter Europol Competition. We also welcome Kyffin Simpson, coming from IndyCar, which is fantastic. Nielsen’s car has shown great performance this year and was competitive at Le Mans last year, so I believe we have a strong package that will allow me to fight for the top and defend my previous victory.”
Simpson expressed his excitement in making his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Nielsen Racing. “After getting back behind the wheel of an LMP2 car at Daytona, I am thrilled to be racing with a successful team and aiming for a class victory at Le Mans. We will start working immediately, including some simulator sessions this week. I can’t wait to join Fabio and David on track.”
