Formula 1 three-time champion secures sixth consecutive pole in 2024
In an impressive display of skill and determination, the Formula 1 three-time champion secured his sixth consecutive pole position in the 2024 season. This remarkable achievement marks his 38th pole in his career, solidifying his status as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. Despite a less than ideal Q3 last lap, he managed to outshine his competitors and secure the top spot for the highly anticipated Sunday race.
Ferrari’s Sainz takes third place in an exciting qualifying session
In an exciting qualifying session, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz showed his skill behind the wheel and secured the third best time. The session proved to be challenging, with drivers having to carefully manage tire temperatures to achieve a competitive lap on the demanding Miami track. Sainz’s impressive performance solidifies his position as a formidable contender in the upcoming race.
Red Bull’s Perez secures fourth place, McLaren’s Norris takes fifth
Red Bull’s Sergio Perez demonstrated his skill and determination by securing the fourth best time in qualifying. The Mexican driver showcased his ability to navigate the demanding Miami track with precision and skill. Meanwhile, McLaren’s Lando Norris impressed with a fifth-place finish, solidifying his position as the team’s lead driver. Both drivers are ready for an exciting race on Sunday.
McLaren’s hopes are dashed as the upgraded MCL38 fails to deliver as expected
Despite high hopes for a strong performance in qualifying, McLaren faced disappointment when their updated MCL38 did not deliver the desired results. The team had hoped to compete for a front row position, but their efforts fell short. However, McLaren remains determined to bounce back and showcase their potential in the next race.
Oscar Piastri shines with an impressive performance
Australian driver Oscar Piastri showcased his talent and determination with an impressive qualifying performance. Despite not having the full upgrade package like his teammate, Piastri proved to be a force to be reckoned with, finishing just a fraction of a second behind Lando Norris in fifth place. His remarkable effort highlights his potential and sets the stage for an exciting race on Sunday.
In the final four minutes, second attempts began and Norris took a risk by putting used medium tires on his MCL38. If you remember, he set his best time in Sprint Qualifying using medium tires in SQ2.
At the end of Q2, Leclerc led the top ten drivers into Q3 with a time of 1:27.533, 0.033s ahead of Verstappen in second and 0.164s ahead of Hamilton in third.
The first driver to miss out on Q3 was Lance Stroll, who was the 11th fastest in the Aston Martin, 0.022s slower than Hulkenberg in 10th.
Pierre Gasly was the 12th fastest in the Alpine, 0.102s behind Stroll and 0.047s ahead of his teammate Esteban Ocon, who was the 13th fastest in the sister car.
Albon finished as the 14th fastest, while Fernando Alonso, who ran out of new soft tires, could only manage 15th place. Both Mercedes drivers managed to make it to Q3 this time.
Just seconds before the start of Q1, the cars lined up in the pitlane, waiting for the green light to go out on the track, which had a surface temperature of 49 degrees Celsius, while the air temperature was at 29 degrees.
Zhou Guanyu was immediately under investigation, as Sauber sent him onto the track in the path of Daniel Ricciardo in the VCARB.
Unlike the Sprint Qualifying, where the medium tire was mandatory in the first two phases, teams could now choose their tires. All teams sent their drivers out on soft tires, using a mix of new and used ones.
Verstappen took his time to go out on track and started his lap when most drivers had already completed their first timed laps, giving him almost exclusive access to the track.
He immediately reported that his clutch was not “sounding good out of the boxes,” but the team reassured him that everything was fine.
After the first laps, the order was as follows: Verstappen in the lead, followed by Sainz and Leclerc, with Perez in fourth place. Piastri and Norris were in ninth and 13th place, respectively.
Soon, the second laps with new soft tires began, and the times continued to improve, with several drivers being faster than their previous attempts.
Sainz surpassed Verstappen’s time, and Norris improved to become the second fastest. Ricciardo brushed lightly against the wall in turn 16, while Verstappen complained about an Alpine car blocking him. Logan Sargeant also complained about Tsunoda ruining his lap.
With the final laps completed, Verstappen remained the fastest with a time of 1:27.689, 0.083s faster than Perez in second place, with Norris coming in third, over two tenths behind the leader.
While Alonso managed to reach Q2, Bottas missed out by 0.010s and will start the race from 16th place, with Sargeant 0.024s behind the Finn, in 17th.
After his impressive performance on Friday and in the previous Sprint race, Ricciardo failed to reach Q2 and will start as the 18th fastest on the grid for Sunday’s grand prix. However, due to his grid penalty from China, he will actually start from the back of the grid.
Kevin Magnussen finished as the 19th fastest, with Zhou in 20th place.
