Doriane Pin, a French pilot from the Prema Racing team, emerged victorious in both races of the Formula 1 Academy. This event took place on March 9, 2024, during the second stage of the Formula 1 World Championship, known as the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
During the first practice session at the Miami International Autodrome, Doriane Pin, who is affiliated with the Mercedes Junior team, engaged in a fierce battle with Abbi Pulling, a junior Alpine driver, to secure the fastest lap time. Pin ultimately emerged victorious with a time of 1:59.949s, constantly swapping positions with Pulling throughout the practice session in Miami.
After participating in a two-day testing program, the drivers returned for the race weekend with a better understanding of the Formula 4 cars. The all-female grid had the privilege of being the first to hit the track in Miami, enjoying the longest practice session so far in the 2024 Formula 1 Academy season.
Initially, Abbi Pulling, the current championship leader, set the fastest lap time with a time of 2:02.745s. However, Doriane Pin, the Mercedes junior driver, managed to surpass her by two tenths of a second, clinching the top spot. Courtney Crone, the Miami guest driver, briefly went off track, allowing Pin to further improve her time by half a second.
Nerea Marti came close to taking the top spot from Pin, but her fast lap was invalidated for exceeding track limits at Turn 5. Jessica Edgar, a British driver, briefly held the fastest time until Pin reduced her time to 2:01.230s, showcasing her early speed in the session.
In the first 10 minutes of the practice session, several drivers had their laps deleted for exceeding track limits at Turn 5. A yellow flag was raised in Sector 2 when Lia Block, a junior driver from Williams, locked up at Turn 8. However, she quickly recovered and the green flags were waved.
Throughout the session, several drivers struggled at Turns 7 and 8, with Pin, the race winner, also locking up shortly after Block. Chloe Chambers, a junior driver from Haas, had difficulties with oversteer and cold tires at Turn 14 when exiting the pits in the middle of the session. Edgar also briefly lost control of his car, sponsored by American Express, at Turn 8 before returning to the pits.
With 11 minutes remaining in the session, Pin set three purple sectors during her flying lap, securing a time of 2:00.186s, which put her half a second ahead of the Alpine junior driver. Pulling, the Iron Lady, managed to surpass Pin by a tenth of a second, reclaiming the top spot. In the final five minutes, the top three drivers, including Bianca Bustamente from McLaren Development and Nerea Marti from Tommy Hilfiger, were separated by just three tenths of a second.
As the session came to a close, the top 10 drivers were within a one-second margin. However, Miami guest driver Courtney Crone was two seconds behind Pin in her home race.
American drivers Block and Chambers are aiming to finish in the points in their home race. They will take advantage of the second practice session later tonight, after the track time for the Formula 1 cars.
Despite her desire to challenge for the top spot, Ferrari junior driver Maya Weug was unable to improve her consistent fourth position throughout the session.
By waving the checkered flag, Pin set the fastest time with 1:59.949s, being the only driver to break the two-minute mark.
Pulling finished the session in second place, closely following the Iron Lady and ending just 0.070s behind the leader.
Bustamente secured the third fastest time, surpassing Weug’s pace at the end of the session.
American driver Chambers achieved the fifth fastest time in her home country, with Red Bull Ford-sponsored driver Emely De Heus finishing sixth.
Edgar finished the first practice session in eighth place, ahead of Aurelia Nobels, while Lia Block completed the top 10 in her home race.
The 15 full-time drivers were separated by approximately 1.5 seconds, but the guest driver was about six tenths behind the rest of the grid.
