Francesco Bagnaia celebrates his victory at the Spanish Grand Prix – Ducati Corse Media
The current MotoGP champion, Francesco Bagnaia, expressed his joy at securing his second win of the season at Jerez. Bagnaia was involved in an exciting battle with Marc Marquez during the final stages of the race.
During the Sprint race on Saturday, Bagnaia, like several other riders, struggled with the wet track conditions and had a crash. This allowed his title rival, Jorge Martin, to extend his lead in the rider standings. However, Bagnaia made an impressive comeback on Sunday. He pulled off an amazing first lap, moving from seventh on the grid to challenging for the lead already on the second lap of the Grand Prix.
When Martin crashed, Bagnaia seized the opportunity and resisted Marquez’s determined attacks to secure the victory. Reflecting on his win, Bagnaia described it as “simply fantastic” and emphasized the importance of the win for himself, his team, and everyone involved.
He also highlighted the intensity of the race and the importance of taking the lead early on. Bagnaia particularly enjoyed his overtaking move on the outside, describing it as a memorable moment.
With Martin out of contention, Bagnaia faced a tough battle against Marquez. The two riders swapped positions in turns 9, 10, and 11 of the Jerez circuit on laps 21 and 22, with Bagnaia finally coming out on top.
On lap 23 of 25, Bagnaia set an impressive race pace with worn tires, securing his victory. He explained that the race was decided in the last five laps and that he focused on defending against Marquez’s attacks before pushing to create a safe gap.
Bagnaia expressed his happiness with the victory, highlighting that it was his third consecutive win in Jerez. The victory, combined with Martin’s DNF, significantly improved Bagnaia’s position in the Championship standings. He entered the race with a 42-point disadvantage compared to Martin, but managed to reduce the gap to just 17 points before the next round in Le Mans.
