VW has just revealed at the Beijing Auto Show, the new ID. Code concept, which previews a future 100% electric model destined for the Chinese market.
Featuring a new design language, created by Andreas Mindt, VW’s design chief, who joined the German brand in January 2023 from Bentley, exclusively designed for the Chinese market, and developed in partnership between the brand’s teams in Europe and China, the 100% electric SUV concept presents clean surfaces, an aerodynamic roofline, and a lot of technology.
In this sense, the ID.Code concept is equipped with the latest and most advanced driving assistance systems, including level 4 of autonomous driving, which allows the driver to take on the role of a passenger, with the car being able to control everything around it. For safety reasons, the driver may still need to intervene. This way, when Center Pilot is activated, the joystick-shaped steering wheel is retracted and the interior takes on a “lounge” appearance. In addition, the seats can rotate 180 degrees, offering a sleeping position for longer trips.VW stated that the interior of this ID.Code concept makes use of a lighting and air conditioning system inspired by the climatic environment of private jet planes. Also noteworthy is the transparent roof that features a photovoltaic system, thus allowing it to provide energy to the ID. Code.
Still in the interior, there is a screen installed at the base of the windshield, complemented by a second vertical screen located next to the floating central console.
The exterior stands out with the bright signature marked by two stripes, one in the front and one in the rear, displaying the brand logo in the middle, which during the time the ID.Code circulates in autonomous driving mode allows communication with other road users, using Artificial Intelligence for this purpose.
Volkswagen also states that the ID. Code incorporates “Smart Windows” throughout the vehicle, allowing the side windows and the passenger side windshield to display information about the weather, battery data, as well as the navigation map.
The German brand did not reveal details about the motorization of the ID.Code, but it is certain that this concept is nothing more than a style exercise that hints at the path VW wants to follow in its future 100% electric models destined for the Chinese market.
“The ID. Code offers a first glimpse of the future of VW in China: with a new design, new technology, and a holistic brand experience – specifically tailored to the needs and desires of our Chinese customers. We are ushering in a new era of mobility in China, together with our Chinese partners.”, stated Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand.
