Adrian Newey, the Chief Technical Officer of Red Bull Racing, has recently been in the spotlight regarding his future in Formula 1. Aston Martin has been making efforts to lure him away from Red Bull for next year. However, Damon Hill, the 1996 world champion, has proposed an alternative option for the British engineer.
Hill suggests that Newey consider joining the McLaren Formula 1 team, based in Woking, before the 2025 season. Newey had previously been associated with McLaren during the 1990s before joining Red Bull in 2006.
Newey is widely regarded as one of the top car designers in the world of motorsport. Under his guidance, Red Bull has been able to develop impressive machines. In the current era of ground effect, no other team has been able to match the performance of the Red Bull RB19 from last year and the RB20 from this year.
While Hill presents McLaren as a tempting opportunity for Newey, he also takes time to assess the team’s prospects for this year. McLaren is currently in third place in the 2024 Constructors’ Championship.
Furthermore, Hill believes that if McLaren and their team leader, [driver’s name], execute their development plans for the MCL38 flawlessly, they will pose a significant challenge to Ferrari for the second position this year.
Currently, Ferrari has accumulated 151 points in the Constructors’ standings, while McLaren has reached 96 points. Although there is still a considerable gap between the two teams, it is possible that McLaren will close this gap in the next 2-3 races. The upcoming Miami Grand Prix will be of utmost importance for the team based in Woking.
