Fernando Alonso delivers an impressive lap when it mattered most during his participation in the Sprint qualifying session in Shanghai. Drivers faced numerous challenges due to the rain-soaked track and newly painted surface, making conditions slippery. Despite these uncertainties, Alonso secured a starting position of P3 for tomorrow’s sprint race.
Alonso openly spoke about the difficulties he faced during the sprint qualifying session. He described the session as « stressful » due to the complicated conditions. The team was aware of the possibility of rain from the beginning of the session and progressed as the track dried.
The 42-year-old driver acknowledged that the team was not particularly competitive even in dry conditions. However, Aston Martin showed improved performance during wet conditions, demonstrating excellent tire degradation management. Alonso noted that the track worsened with each lap.
« It was quite stressful, to be honest, » admitted Alonso. « In Q1, we were constantly monitoring the radar for the threat of rain. We progressed in both Q1 and Q2, but only managed to secure P8 or P9. »
Despite the challenges, Alonso achieved an impressive P3 starting position for the sprint race in China. This puts him in a good position to compete for his first sprint victory in high-level motorsport. The improving pace of Aston Martin, demonstrated by Lance Stroll’s leading performance in FP1, suggests they could pose a strong challenge to Mercedes in the upcoming race.
The rainy conditions on the circuit made it difficult for the team to determine the ideal setup. This resulted in difficulties for Alonso throughout the session. However, he expressed extreme satisfaction with his third place in the qualifying session.
