Nico Hulkenberg, the German driver for Haas VF-24, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s progress in the early stages of the 2024 Formula 1 season. He believes the true extent of the improvements will become more apparent in Suzuka. After securing Haas’ first point of the season in Saudi Arabia, Hulkenberg led his teammate Kevin Magnussen in Australia, resulting in a double score. Haas’ new team principal, Ayao Komatsu, initially tempered expectations for the season, but Hulkenberg was pleasantly surprised by the advances made in aerodynamic performance and tire management during races. However, he anticipates that the high-speed characteristics of the Suzuka circuit in Japan may pose a challenge for Haas. Hulkenberg explained that the team made significant progress in a short amount of time, especially in December, when the aerodynamics team solved previous issues and achieved greater consistency on race days, resulting in improved tire life and performance. Despite this progress, Hulkenberg acknowledged that tire management was still challenging during the Australian Grand Prix, with wear being a major concern for all teams. However, Haas secured their second score of the season, placing seventh in the Constructors’ Championship, just behind the revamped RB team. Hulkenberg emphasized the need to be cautious in drawing conclusions, noting that his strong performance in Jeddah was the result of a collective team effort. He also mentioned the fierce competition with AlphaTauri (formerly RB) in the championship standings.
“I didn’t see a Sauber participating in this race, but with Sauber, with Williams, and even with Alpine.”
“So, you know, just a little effort can make a significant difference. Therefore, it’s just a matter of consistently maximizing your performance throughout the weekend, in every session.”
“And so far, I believe we have been successful in that. Also, I have been lucky on some occasions, which is always nice. However, eventually, the other competitors will also have some favorable circumstances.”
“The key aspect is to focus on developing the car and continuously improving every aspect,” Hulkenberg stated after the previous race.
When asked about his collaboration with teammate Magnussen, the German driver believes they have established a strong working relationship, despite past personal conflicts.
Magnussen followed a team directive to let Hulkenberg pass him in Melbourne, while the Danish driver held off several cars in Saudi Arabia to help the German secure tenth place.
“We are functioning as a cohesive unit, like a couple. I believe we both have similar goals for the car, pointing in the same direction, which greatly benefits the team and allows us to progress harmoniously,” he added. “And yes, both on and off the track, we have a good relationship.”
