Daniel Ricciardo, the Australian driver for RB Formula 1, acknowledged that he is unable to maintain the same speed as his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, when entering corners. This admission comes after Ricciardo once again trailed Tsunoda in the Australian Grand Prix. Unfortunately, Ricciardo’s struggles in the 2024 season continued in his home race, as his best lap time was deleted for exceeding track limits, resulting in his elimination in the first qualifying session.
In an attempt to gain an advantage, RB decided to start Ricciardo on soft tires and brought him into the pits on lap 5 for an undercut strategy. However, this move was quickly neutralized by other teams, nullifying any potential benefits. Despite stopping before his closest competitors during the second round of pit stops, Ricciardo was unable to overtake the Haas drivers and compete for a points-scoring position.
Interestingly, both Max Verstappen and the Mercedes drivers failed to finish the race, but Ricciardo could only manage a 12th place finish. In contrast, his teammate Tsunoda secured a seventh place. Reflecting on the race, Ricciardo mentioned that everyone seemed to be stopping early, making it difficult for him to gain an advantage. He also speculated that teams starting on medium tires may have faced difficulties. Ricciardo expressed uncertainty about how far he could have progressed in the pack, considering the circumstances.
When you find yourself at the back of the pack, you need to take risks and try something different. Ricciardo believed his team’s strategy was not foolish, especially when compared to Nico Hulkenberg’s decision to start on hard tires. Ricciardo was surprised by Hulkenberg’s strong pace on the first lap and expected him to struggle more. It seemed like Hulkenberg and his team made the right choices to maximize their performance.
Ricciardo expressed confusion about his difference to Tsunoda in terms of a single lap, noting that even if his excluded lap time was taken into account, he would still be behind the Japanese driver. Although Ricciardo found some encouragement in his race pace at Albert Park Circuit, he admitted he is still struggling to keep up with his teammate.
“I believe we were stronger in the first stint with the hard tires,” explained Ricciardo. “However, we encountered wear after a period of Virtual Safety Car, which caused us to lose time. In the second stint, after overtaking Ocon in the Alpine, I was able to set competitive lap times in the low 21-second range. However, we faced some challenges with blue flags and other factors. There were moments that seemed more promising, but I still have some concerns that I need to discuss with the team. Even when we are going fast, I feel like there are certain aspects that I am missing. However, there is some encouragement and we will continue working on it. I want to emphasize that it is not a lack of confidence in the car’s performance, but rather a matter of maintaining speed like Yuki does. I am actively seeking answers from the team, so it is a collaborative effort.”
Ricciardo ensured that he is actively engaging with the engineers to overcome his current difficulties and remains optimistic about progressing in the near future. When asked if a positive race would be the turning point he needs, Ricciardo replied: “I certainly hope so. I’ve been asking a lot of questions to the team, and we have some updates planned for the car in the upcoming races. I anticipate a quick turnaround, and before we know it, we’ll be back at a high level… Well, I say that in a relaxed way, but I really believe it. So yes, we are aiming to change things.”
