The path to electric mobility has the merit of bringing back some of the most historic models from automotive brands, now in electric format.
The most recent case is the Renault 5, which this year will have a zero-emission variant. However, according to “Autocar“, VW may soon join the French brand, as the German manufacturer is considering the possibility of producing the Scirocco again, the coupe from the 70s, in a fully electric variant with two motors and therefore all-wheel drive.
The British automotive publication reports that initial design proposals for an electric Scirocco were developed in early 2023, shortly after the arrival of Andreas Mindt, design director, at the German brand.
If the project for the new 100% electric Scirocco receives the green light to proceed from Thomas Schäfer, CEO of VW, the new model is expected to be launched in 2028.
Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1974, the Scirocco went through three generations, the last of which was produced at the Autoeuropa factory in Portugal between 2008 and 2017, the year VW ended production of the model.
