Google Maps Brings Weather Overlay to Android Devices
In a move that brings Android devices closer to their iPhone counterparts, Google is expanding the availability of its weather overlay feature on Google Maps. The feature, which debuted on iPhones, has been a highly requested addition for Android users. While Google has been tight-lipped about its plans for the feature on Android devices, a limited number of users have reported seeing weather information on their maps in recent months.
The rollout of the weather overlay is happening in stages, so not all users will immediately see the feature. However, lucky users will notice a small weather icon in the top left corner of their Google Maps screen. Tapping on the icon opens a full weather overlay, displaying current conditions, temperature, and air quality index (AQI) score. Users can also expand the air quality data for more detailed information.
One of the standout features of the weather overlay is its automatic update functionality. As users browse the map, the weather data is automatically updated to reflect the conditions of the location being explored. This is particularly useful for users planning trips to multiple destinations, as they can easily view the current temperature for each location. The forecast can also be expanded to provide additional information, aiding in route planning.
Interestingly, the weather overlay does not seem to be tied to a specific app version. Some reports suggest that it appeared in version 11.113.x, but this is not consistent across all devices. It appears that Google is using a server-side rollout for this feature, meaning it can be enabled or disabled remotely.
While Google has not made an official announcement about the weather overlay, this move is a step towards narrowing the gap between the Android and iOS versions of Google Maps. In addition to the weather overlay, Google Maps is also receiving other capabilities, such as integration with Android Auto. Another useful feature making its way to Android Auto is the ability to save parking locations. This allows users to continue using Google Maps for step-by-step directions after parking their cars, making it a comprehensive navigation solution both inside and outside of the vehicle.
