Mercedes-Benz has made the decision to discontinue several of their open-top models, such as the AMG GT Roadster, S-Class Cabriolet, SLC, and the open-top versions of the C-Class and E-Class. However, they are introducing a new addition to their lineup – the CLE Cabriolet series. This series aims to carry on the tradition of providing convertible cars that can accommodate four people and allow them to enjoy the wind in their hair. While the CLE Cabriolet may not offer high speeds, it compensates with features like the acoustic soft top, Aircap, Airscarf, and other comfortable amenities.
The CLE Cabriolet is based on the CLE Coupe series and is set to be available for summer adventures in Europe, with orders already being accepted and deliveries scheduled for late April 2024. Pricing details have also been revealed, with the starting price in Germany being 66,402 euros ($71,469). It’s certainly not a budget-friendly option, but it’s in line with expectations for a luxury convertible.
Mercedes has put in efforts to ensure a peaceful and undisturbed experience for the occupants of the CLE Cabriolet. The Aircap electric wind deflector system and the standard Airscarf headroom heating system are just a couple of the features that contribute to this. The soft fabric top can be customized to match the body color, with options available in black, red, or grey. It takes just 20 seconds to open or close the top, and this can be done at speeds of up to 60 kph (37 mph). Inside the cabin, the CLE Cabriolet is equipped with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch portrait central display that is angled to prevent glare from the sun when the top is down. The seats have a special coating that reflects near-infrared radiation, keeping the leather cooler during hot summer days. The available leather options include black, macchiato beige/black, tonka brown/black, power red/black, and white/black. The standard Avantgarde Line comes with black Artico/Microcut leather.
In Europe, the CLE Cabriolet offers three powertrain options, all of which are mild hybrids. The CLE 200 variant, with 201 horsepower, can be chosen with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with prices starting at 68,782 euros ($74,024). This version can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 7.9 or 8 seconds. The CLE 220d, powered by a 197 horsepower diesel engine, has the same starting price as the CLE 200 AWD and similar performance specifications, but with lower fuel consumption.
