Volvo’s first MPV, the EM90, was unveiled in China on November 12, 2023. It marks a significant step for the brand and sits on Geely’s SEA platform, which also underpins other models such as the Zeekr 009, the Polestar 4, the Lotus Eletre and Emeya, and the new Smart models. Volvo recently shared photos from the factory on its Weibo account, showcasing the start of mass production.
The EM90 shares the exact same dimensions as the Zeekr-badged model. It measures 205 inches long, 79.6 inches wide, and 73.1 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 126 inches. This MPV offers six seats in a 2+2+2 layout. The second row features captain-style seats with power reclining, heating, and ventilation, as well as folding trays. Volvo designed this vehicle to cater to both family trips and business transportation needs. For family trips, the EM90 is equipped with a rear 15.6-inch screen with a video camera. This screen drops from the roof when rear occupants need to attend an online meeting. It supports mobile screen projection and a variety of third-party apps. Additionally, there is a Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 21 speakers on board.
Under the hood, the EM90 is available with a single powertrain option. It features a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle, generating 268 horsepower in a rear-wheel drive layout. This allows the MPV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 8.3 seconds. The vehicle weighs 6,091 pounds. Unlike the Zeekr 009, the Volvo EM90 does not offer an all-wheel drive option.
The EM90 is powered by a CATL-sourced ternary NMC battery pack with a capacity of 116 kWh. According to the CLTC (China Light-Duty Testing Cycle), it can provide a range of up to 459 miles. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.
Initially, the EM90 will only be available in China, with prices starting at 818,000 yuan ($115,090). This includes the European premium factor. In comparison, the Zeekr 009 starts at 500,000 yuan ($70,348). It remains to be seen if the Volvo model will gain traction in the Chinese market, considering the significant price difference.
Deliveries of the EM90 are set to begin in March. Volvo is considering expanding to other markets, but this decision will depend on the MPV’s success in China. However, the brand is cautious due to the declining popularity of MPVs in Europe and the United States, where crossovers and SUVs have dominated the market for years.
