Airline operators worldwide are making efforts to update their fleets, whether through retrofitting existing aircraft or designing new-generation planes. In Australia, Aviation Logistics has taken a bold step by becoming the official launch partner for the Vertiia hybrid-electric VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing). This general aviation and regional airline group believes that future aircraft will run on electricity or hydrogen and has paid deposits for ten units from AMSL Aero, with the option to add ten more. The group plans to operate these hybrid-powered VTOLs through its associated companies, Air Link, AirMed, and Chartair, showcasing the aircraft’s versatility.
This order from Aviation Logistics is unique because it covers multiple potential functions of the Vertiia aircraft. With three different companies operating the VTOLs, they will demonstrate their capabilities in passenger transportation, cargo services, and aeromedical missions. Vertiia aims to be the world’s most efficient long-range zero-emission VTOL, capable of covering up to 1,000 km at 300 kph. This extended range opens up new commercial possibilities compared to other electric air taxis that have shorter ranges.
What sets Vertiia apart is its hydrogen propulsion technology, making it a pioneer in emission-free passenger transportation. While most urban air taxis are expected to be purely electric, Vertiia is designed from the ground up to run on hydrogen. Although hydrogen-based alternatives for aircraft currently exist as retrofitting solutions, Vertiia is one of the first passenger VTOLs specifically designed to utilize hydrogen.
However, it’s important to note that the widespread use of hydrogen-powered VTOLs won’t happen overnight. While some electric air taxis are preparing to enter commercial service next year, the hydrogen-powered alternative is not expected to take off until 2027. Aviation Logistics, as the manufacturer’s first civil customer, estimates that regular flights operated by its associated companies will commence in 2027.
Vertiia is a trailblazer in Australia’s aviation industry. In addition to its extended range, the aircraft promises exceptional efficiency, using less energy per seat than a high-speed train. It also boasts quiet urban operations, with noise levels ranging from 65 to 70 decibels. Overall, Aviation Logistics’ partnership with AMSL Aero and its commitment to hydrogen-powered VTOLs demonstrate the group’s dedication to a sustainable and innovative future in aviation.
