Belichick’s Son Lands New Coaching Gig
Steve Belichick, son of former NFL coaching legend Bill Belichick, has secured a new job. The 36-year-old has been serving as the New England Patriots’ outside linebackers coach under his father since 2020. However, according to multiple reports, he is now set to become the defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies.
While there is a possibility that the Patriots and new head coach Jerod Mayo may make an effort to retain Belichick, sources suggest that this is unlikely. The Patriots recently fired Bill Belichick after a disappointing 4-13 season in 2023. Despite his impressive record, the elder Belichick has yet to secure another NFL head coaching position, as there are currently no openings available.
Steve Belichick joined the coaching staff at New England in 2012, despite having no prior coaching experience. He initially served as a defensive assistant before transitioning to safeties coach from 2016 to 2019. Since 2020, he has been coaching the team’s outside linebackers. During his time with the Patriots, Belichick had the opportunity to work closely with quarterback coach Jedd Fisch, who has since become the head coach for the Arizona Wildcats.
Fisch, now the head coach for the Washington Huskies, has chosen to bring Belichick onto his coaching staff. There are also rumors that he may bring over New England’s running backs coach, Vinnie Sunseri. Washington is taking a risk with this hiring, as Belichick’s experience in football is overshadowed by his background in lacrosse at Rutgers University. However, Fisch may have seen potential in Belichick during their time together in New England.
Furthermore, Fisch’s decision to hire Belichick could be a strategic move to pave the way for the eventual hiring of Bill Belichick himself. The elder Belichick is widely regarded as one of the greatest football minds and could serve as an invaluable analyst before securing another NFL head coaching position. This strategy would undoubtedly be a bold and intriguing one.
