WILLIAMS UNVEILS NEW LIVERY FOR 2024 FORMULA 1 CAR IN NEW YORK
In a highly anticipated launch event in New York, Williams has revealed the stunning new livery for its 2024 Formula 1 car. The team has opted for a sleek and darker blue design, paying homage to its rich championship-winning heritage. The livery was showcased on a car that closely resembled last year’s Williams FW45, with the actual FW46 set to make its debut during a Bahrain shakedown run on February 20, just one day before the three-day pre-season test commences.
During the event, Williams also announced a new multi-year sponsorship deal with Komatsu, a renowned producer of construction, mining, forestry, and industrial heavy equipment. This partnership holds special significance as Komatsu supplied gearbox components to Williams during their victorious campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s, including their title-winning seasons in 1996 and 1997.
Team boss James Vowles expressed his excitement about the new livery, emphasizing the significant commercial progress the team has made. He also highlighted the tribute the livery pays to Frank Williams, the team’s founder, and the team’s overall identity as a racing organization. Vowles stated, “We’re here for racing. I feel that really comes across.”
The FW46 represents a milestone for Williams as it is the first car designed under the leadership of James Vowles. Taking over from Jost Capito in January last year, Vowles faced the challenge of leading the design process for a car that had already been conceived. However, he remains confident in the team’s ability to deliver a competitive car for the upcoming season.
The team’s driver lineup remains strong, with Alex Albon leading the charge once again. However, there may be uncertainties surrounding Albon’s future as he enters the final year of his contract. The recent announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2024 has shaken up the driver market, potentially impacting Williams’ ability to retain Albon.
Albon himself expressed his eagerness to see the improvements in the new car, stating that the team has made adjustments to its philosophy and aims to enhance the car’s characteristics. While it may require an adjustment in driving style, Albon is confident that these changes will lead to a better performance on the track.
In addition to the driver lineup, Williams also showcased its Williams Driver Academy, which consists of seven talented drivers. Jamie Chadwick, a Williams-backed driver, is preparing for her second season in Indy NXT and will also be mentoring Lia Block, who will be competing in the second season of the all-female F1 Academy series in 2024. Furthermore, Zak O’Sullivan and Franco Colapinto, who gained valuable F1 experience with Williams last year, will be making their full-time Formula 2 debuts with ART Grand Prix and MP Motorsport respectively in 2024.
As the 2024 Formula 1 launch season kicks off, teams and journalists are eagerly analyzing the changes and innovations introduced by each team. Pre-season testing will provide the first indications of which teams are likely to be competitive in the upcoming season, setting the stage for an exhilarating year of racing.
