Why Choose a Box Truck Conversion?
If you’re considering a camper conversion, you might be wondering why you should choose a box truck over a cargo van. Well, there are several advantages to going with a box truck. First, their straight-line construction makes it easier to design and build the interior. Additionally, box trucks have a higher weight capacity, making them ideal for carrying heavy loads. Not to mention, they are often more affordable than cargo vans. And if you’re into stealth camping, a box truck can help you fly under the radar. Introducing GTVans and Their Box Truck Conversion
Today, we’re taking a closer look at a box truck conversion by GTVans, a company specializing in camper conversions based in Long Beach. When researching a new company, I usually start by reading their “About Us” page. However, GTVans takes a different approach. Their “About Us” page simply states, “Who cares about us? It’s all in the build.” And they have a point – what matters most to people are the rigs they create, not the individuals behind them. But let’s dive into the details of this box truck conversion.
The Details of the Conversion
This particular box truck is a 1997 Ford Econoline with rear-wheel drive and a powerful 7.3-liter diesel engine. To enhance its off-road capabilities, GTVans has equipped it with a lift kit and off-road tires. While it may not have a 4×4 drivetrain, the truck’s dual rear wheels should help it handle some off-road adventures, as long as you don’t venture too deep.
The History and Progress of the Conversion
Originally, this box truck served as a mobile blood clinic before being transformed into an old-school-style RV. In 2020, GTVans acquired the vehicle, and after a few years of work, it has reached its current state. Remarkably, the truck had only accumulated 50,000 miles (80,467 km) when GTVans took ownership. Although there are still a few minor details that need to be finished, the project is nearly complete, with GTVans estimating it to be about 96% finished.
Exterior Features and Highlights
The exterior of the box truck is coated in a durable grey Raptor liner, providing protection against minor scratches and bumps. GTVans has made several additions to enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of the vehicle. At the front, they have installed an Aluminess front bumper with integrated Baja Designs lights and a winch. The original lights have been replaced with Vantage Optics headlights, and all exterior lights have been upgraded to LEDs.
Notable exterior features include a roof rack above the driver’s cabin, which holds additional Baja Design lights. There is also a door that leads to an Aqua-Hot water heater and another door that provides access to a spacious garage located beneath the bed. This garage houses the plumbing system, highlighted by a massive 58-gallon (220-liter) freshwater tank. The power system is located on the driver’s side of the truck, although specific details have not been disclosed by GTVans.

Interior of Box Truck Transformed into Stylish Studio Apartment
In a stunning transformation, a box truck has been converted into a luxurious studio apartment on wheels. The exterior is adorned with unique accessories, including a spare tire carrier, a storage box, and even a ladder. But the real showstopper is the roof, which features a fake grass cover, making it not only visually appealing but also a comfortable spot for sitting and even practicing your golf swing. The roof also boasts an integrated A/C unit and two fans, ensuring a pleasant environment no matter where you go.
Step inside, and you’ll be amazed at the level of sophistication. The interior has been completely revamped, leaving no trace of its former self. The white walls and ceiling, paired with black cabinetry and bamboo accents, create a sleek and modern look. The abundance of light fixtures, including recessed lights and under-cabinet lighting, adds to the overall ambiance.
As you enter, you’ll be greeted by a spacious seating area with a large couch and a window behind it, providing ample natural light. The couch can be extended to create a comfortable 6-foot-long bed, perfect for accommodating overnight guests. Above the seating area, there are two generous overhead cabinets, offering plenty of storage space.
Right by the entrance, you’ll find the control center, equipped with touch switches for the lights and displays to monitor the utility systems. The driver’s cabin has been left open, seamlessly blending with the living space. The driver’s and passenger’s seats have been reupholstered and can be swiveled, allowing for additional sleeping space or a cozy spot for a child or pet.
The kitchen, located in the middle of the interior, is divided into two parts for convenience. On one side, you’ll find a dual-burner induction stove, a spacious bamboo countertop, and a sleek black sink with a wooden cover. On the opposite side, there is a large fridge, an overhead microwave, and a roomy closet for hanging clothes. Additional storage options include drawers underneath the countertop, a pull-out pantry, and overhead cabinets running along the ceiling.
At the rear of the truck, you’ll discover the bedroom and bathroom. The bed has been slightly modified to allow for walking space but can still comfortably accommodate two people. Above the bed, there is a large shelf, perfect for storing personal belongings.
This box truck conversion is a testament to creativity and ingenuity, turning a simple vehicle into a stylish and functional living space. Whether you’re embarking on a road trip or looking for a unique living arrangement, this transformed box truck is sure to impress.
