The NHL All-Star Weekend has come to a close, and the highly anticipated event did not disappoint. Connor McDavid, known for his incredible speed, emerged victorious in the All-Star Skills Competition. This revamped competition featured a select group of the league’s top stars vying for a million-dollar prize. Picture it as the gymnastics all-around competition at the Olympics, but with more pucks and fewer flips.
It was evident from the start that McDavid was the favorite to win the fastest skater competition. His speed on the ice is unmatched, as confirmed by NHL Edge, which tracks players’ top speeds and bursts. The only other competitor who came close to McDavid’s level was Nathan MacKinnon from the Colorado Avalanche.
When the moment of truth arrived, McDavid did not disappoint. As ESPN’s John Buccigross pointed out, it was clear to everyone watching that McDavid was significantly faster than his opponents. The NHL later released a captivating video that showcased all the fastest skaters in one composite. The footage was truly mesmerizing, akin to what you might see in motorsports.
As you watch the video, pay attention to McDavid’s explosive drive out of the first turn. He effortlessly outpaced his competitors, leaving them in his dust. Even as he approached the finish line, he maintained a comfortable lead over Quinn Hughes and Matt Barzal.
While McDavid’s speed is impressive, it is worth noting that he is not the fastest player in the league. Owen Tippett of the Philadelphia Flyers holds the record for the highest speed this season, clocking in at 24.21 mph during a game against the Montreal Canadiens. Only three other players have surpassed the 24 mph mark: Braden Point of the Tampa Bay Lightning (24.15 mph), Nathan MacKinnon (24.05 mph), and surprisingly, McDavid himself (24.05 mph).
The NHL All-Star Skills Competition was a thrilling showcase of the league’s top talent, with McDavid emerging as the undisputed speed champion. His exceptional skills and lightning-fast speed make him a force to be reckoned with on the ice.
