A Hyundai Mobis, the division for new technologies of the South Korean brand, presented at CES 2024 the latest update to the e-Corner system, which allows the brand’s electric models to move diagonally or laterally, like crabs.
The technology combines the system of electric motors on the four directional wheels, which rotate up to 90 degrees to allow unparalleled maneuverability in automobiles. For example, in city parking maneuvers, simply turn the wheels to the maximum point and accelerate towards the sidewalk where you want to park. But not only that: the e-Corner system from Hyundai Mobis, being tested on an Ioniq 5, offers the ability to reverse by simply rotating 180 degrees on itself.
The technology of independent modules that combine the steering, braking, suspension, and driving systems on each wheel will allow for the flexibility of using next-generation platforms, as they do not require any mechanical connection between the parts, guaranteeing more space in the cabin and much more flexibility in the body design.
Hyundai does not confirm the application of the system in a specific model in the short term, but for the second consecutive edition of the major technology fair in Las Vegas, the e-Corner is one of the highlights of the Korean brand. And where there’s smoke…
