The Hyundai Motor Group and Motional, a global leader in autonomous technology, have officially inaugurated the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center in Singapore and announced that the first production models of the Ioniq5 robotaxi will be produced at that innovation unit.
It is already known that the Ioniq5 robotaxis will be deployed as part of Motional’s commercial services in the United States, with operations scheduled to begin in 2024.
It should be noted that the robotaxi was one of the first level 4 autonomous vehicles to be certified under the United States Federal Vehicle Safety Standards, and it will allow people to travel in a driverless taxi.
The Hyundai autonomous taxi will operate in partnership with Uber, using the mobility application to request the vehicle in the same way as a driver-operated vehicle.
The robotaxi has over 30 sensors – a combination of cameras, radars, and lidar – that provide a 360º perception, high-resolution images, and long-range object detection for safe autonomous operation in various driving situations. The robotaxi will be equipped with proven autonomous driving technology from Motional, which includes advanced machine learning systems – trained on decades of real-world data – that enable the vehicle to safely operate in challenging and complex driving situations.
