Honda’s Team Manager, Alberto Puig, recently shared insights on how the team plans to tackle the 2027 MotoGP regulation changes, which include reducing engine capacity from 1000cc to 850cc and banning certain devices like the holeshot. Puig emphasized Honda’s commitment to maintaining speed and innovation amidst these shifts.
“Well, I mean, from Honda’s point of view, you know, the company has been racing since 1959, which is a long time ago, and they have been adapting to different regulations, different drivers, rules, and in all classes.” Puig began to explain .
The Repsol Honda Team Manager continued : “So now we have reached a point where it is going to change again. And I think it is a challenge for everyone. And Honda will be there to see how we can do it. And a new regulation is always made. It’s important how you got there. In this case, it was a long negotiation with all the manufacturers with Dorna and all the parties. And finally, we reached an agreement, which is consensus, which is always good. So yes, we have the regulation, and we are going for it.”
Changes in engine capacity, the same with aerodynamics, and there will be no ‘holeshot’ device either. “This is very difficult, because from my experience, we have seen many different regulations. But ultimately, we are always getting faster. So I want to say, I think this is the key for engineers ,” added Alberto Puig.
“I mean, this is the number one championship in the world. So what we don’t want is to be slow. So in a way, it’s going to be a challenge for everyone. And also for the riders, I mean, if they take some devices off the bikes now, they’re probably going to have to use a little more durability as a rider and not rely on technology as much. So in the end, I think it will be quite a challenge ”.
In addition, the engine capacity is going to be reduced ,” reflected the former rider and Team Manager in MotoGP. “So there is always a reduction in engine capacity. Engineers have to think very, very carefully about how they do it, because they don’t want to lose too much. They know they have to lose, but they will try not to. Anyway, finally, I mean, it’s going to be interesting, and Honda is going to be ready for it , ” Puig said.
“Well, I don’t know, but I think all the factories are already thinking about how they will do it. So I think it’s already underway. But I don’t know what the others are doing. But the common basic thing is that you have to start thinking soon ”
Puig reiterated Honda’s focus on innovation and adaptation, ensuring that the team remains competitive despite regulatory changes.
Preparing for Change:
Puig highlighted that all factories are strategizing for these changes to stay ahead in the competition. The emphasis is on starting early to integrate new strategies and technologies smoothly.
