Alonso López started the year with a victorious performance, clinching the Moto2 Qatar Grand Prix at Losail. Consequently, the Speed Up rider is the first leader of the championship.
Quoted by the newspaper Marca, the Spaniard revealed that tyre management made the difference and did not hide the psychological importance of the win: ‘The difference compared to last year is that I managed to preserve the tyres. The strategy worked well, and we have paved the way for the other races. There is still some room for improvement with the tires, and we want to continue on this path. After having a blank year in terms of victories, this triumph makes me as happy as if it were the first. And knowing that I can fight for the championship lead boosts my morale’.
López did not shy away from responding to critics: ‘I’m not upset, but the thing is, there are armchair riders. The problem is that it’s very easy to judge from home, and they don’t know what goes on inside. I think last year was very difficult for me, and if I had what I had in 2022, I could have aimed for the championship, but it wasn’t like that’.
The rider also spoke about his teammate Fermín Aldeguer, seen by many as the main contender for the Moto2 title and seemingly on his way to MotoGP in 2025: ‘Ultimately, beating my teammate always stimulates me, and he is the first one I want to beat. We get along very well, he is my biggest rival, so to speak. I think last year Fermín ended the season in a stellar way, but I believe that in good conditions, I can win’.
