VTR Customs, the creative arm of Swiss BMW dealer VTR Motorrad, has stunned the motorcycle world with its latest creation: the BMW R1200 R LC. This custom motorcycle, based on the 2017 BMW R1200 R, represents a bold fusion between classic aircraft design and modern motorcycle engineering.
The most distinctive element of this creation is its cylindrical aluminum body, which immediately evokes the image of vintage aircraft fuselages. This bodywork, entirely handcrafted by VTR, envelops the mechanical components of the original R1200 R, including its engine, wheels, and braking system.
Aviation-inspired details abound in this project. The standard instrument panel has been replaced with original instrumentation from the legendary RAF Spitfire fighter, creating a direct link to aviation history. Interestingly, this is not the only connection between BMW and the Spitfire: in 2003, BMW AG acquired the automotive department of Rolls-Royce, manufacturer of the Merlin engine used in the famous combat aircraft.
The customization goes beyond the visual. The rear of the motorcycle has been modified, with the swingarm fixed directly to the frame, eliminating the shock absorber. At the front, the fork’s travel has been reduced by 30 mm. The original handlebars have been replaced with ABM Vario clip-ons, and both the tank and footrests are unique handmade pieces.
Perhaps the most spectacular element is the “flamethrower” exhaust, which replicates the effect of radial engines from old aircraft, spitting flames on startup.
Despite its impressive appearance, comfort has likely been sacrificed for design. Nevertheless, this VTR Customs creation stands out as one of the most stunning and original customizations in the current motorcycle world, uniquely combining aviation heritage with modern motorcycle engineering.
This customized BMW R1200 R LC not only pays homage to aviation history but also demonstrates the creativity and skill of VTR’s artists, setting new standards in the field of motorcycle customization.
