Carlos Sainz did not have luck on his side on the first day of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in Formula 1. After finishing seventh in the first free practice, focused on working on his Ferrari, the Spanish driver was out of FP2 in less than ten minutes, due to a strong crash on the way to turn three at Yas Marina.
The Madrid driver admitted that it was far from an ideal day and explained the incident in the second session: ‘It is obvious that it was not the Friday we wanted here in Abu Dhabi. We played a bit with the setup in FP1 and I was looking forward to FP2 after making some changes to the car. Unfortunately, I hit a big bump on the entry to turn three and lost the car on top of it, jumping on the track and hitting the barriers. It was a costly mistake and I regret giving the mechanics some extra work’.
After the incident this Friday, Sainz is already looking ahead to the second day at Yas Marina: ‘I am sure that tomorrow we will be back on track and ready to start. It seems that the field will be tight, so we can expect an interesting qualifying session’.
