It’s very likely that in 2027, the MotoGP engines will undergo a reduction in displacement from the current 1,000cc to 850cc. Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna, anticipates unanimous approval from manufacturers, although he doesn’t yet confirm whether this change will indeed happen.
In an interview with AS newspaper, the Spanish executive confirmed that ‘it’s possible’ to have new 850cc engines in less than four years, explaining the objective: ‘To make the bikes less fast, in the context of safety. It’s a proposal we made and will be approved unanimously by the manufacturers. It makes sense’.
When asked about what would be the ideal speed for the bikes, Ezpeleta replied: ‘The issue is not top speed but rather acceleration, cornering, which is very important, weight… . We tried to listen to what all the manufacturers were saying, and based on that, I presented them with another cut that I will propose for their review’.
