MONTE-CARLO, MONACO – MAY 25: Dutch driver Max Verstappen from Oracle Red Bull Racing team, who finished sixth, talks to the press in the Paddock after qualifying before the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Monaco Circuit on May 25, 2024 in Monte-Carlo, Monaco. (Photo by Clive Rose/Getty Images)
If Verstappen encounters difficulties, poor Perez is completely lost, as evidenced by his elimination in Q1. The RB20, designed by Adrian Newey & Co., has idiosyncrasies that are ruthlessly exposed on circuits like Monaco, where efficient high downforce is essential. This Red Bull does not thrive on intricate, stop-start tracks lacking high-speed sections.
The performance of the F1 World Champions throughout the weekend in Monte-Carlo suggests that not everything is well in their “Camelot,” and former F1 winner, now commentator, Johnny Herbert has also noticed: “It’s a perplexing concern for Max.
“They have been struggling to secure wins lately, and now it’s becoming difficult to even make it into the top six. It’s a big worry. He may have his sights set on a podium, but realistically, I don’t think he will be confident of winning here on this track from his current position. The weather is forecasted to be favorable,” Herbert shared with the BestPokerSites.ltd media team.
“Red Bull often employs smart strategies, but it would take a miracle for them to secure a win now. We heard him on the radio expressing his dissatisfaction, especially with the car’s performance in the corners, and that’s Max for you – he’s a perfectionist.
“I understand that Monaco has its peculiarities and the results are not always favorable, but he had three interesting last races. I’m not sure if it’s a drop in performance or if the other teams suddenly came to life at the same time,” Herbert explained.
To make matters worse on the other side of the Red Bull Racing box, Sergio Perez was overtaken by the two VCARBs (also known as Red Bull F1 Junior Team) for two consecutive races, and the elimination in Q1 will have a detrimental impact on the experienced Mexican driver.
Herbert continued: “Perez’s performance has been inadequate. Drivers competing for wins and championships need to be consistent. Max had a bad day and is still in sixth place. Sergio had a bad day and is in 18th, twelve places behind. This is a disappointing display.
“These are not the performances you would expect from a second driver for the best team of recent years. It is a big disappointment for Sergio and for Red Bull,” said the 59-year-old Englishman.
Herbert proposes a solution to the Red Bull drivers’ dilemma: “I feel sorry for Tsunoda; his performances have been impressive. If there is a vacancy next to Max at Red Bull next season, Tsunoda should be considered.
“He is a bit explosive and can be inflamed on the radio, but we have also seen this with Max. If Red Bull needs to make a choice, Tsunoda should be at the top of the list,” Herbert insisted.
Regarding the “prodigal son” of RBR, Daniel Ricciardo, Johnny added: “Daniel has occasionally shown his capabilities, but occasional success is not enough. If Daniel were surpassing Tsunoda, everyone would be praising him for a job well done, but Tsunoda has been exceptional and consistent, and I don’t hear people recognizing that.”
“Dan has conquered victories on the track, but that has been absent from his performance in the last five years,” Herbert recalled. “However, he has not been able to recover his former success. We are still waiting for Daniel to make a big breakthrough. He hoped that this would happen in Miami, but we are still waiting.
“There comes a time when you have to admit that it’s no longer there,” concluded Herbert, a former Formula 1 driver who won three Grand Prix in his career that spanned from the 1989 Brazilian GP to his last F1 race at the 2000 Malaysian GP.
Although it is still early to raise concerns, the signs are evident for the Champions. Red Bull is more vulnerable this season compared to last year, no matter how you analyze it. However, Verstappen comfortably leads the F1 2024 championship race, with the 8th round in Monaco today.
So far, the Dutch driver has accumulated 161 points, with Ferrari’s driver, Charles Leclerc, in second place, trailing by 48 points. Red Bull currently holds the top spot in the Constructors’ championship, with a 56-point advantage over Ferrari. Last year, Verstappen triumphed in the race starting from pole position.
