Marco Bezzecchi is already one of the prominent figures in MotoGP. Despite the 2024 season being somewhat complicated, the rider from Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team has already achieved a podium – adding to the ones from last year, including his two first victories.
Before the Catalunya GP, Motorcycle Sports had the opportunity to participate in an interview with Bezzecchi. A conversation that addressed the present and the progress he has been able to make, but also what the future might hold – both in terms of his 2025 contract and the prospects regarding the 2027 regulations.
Question (Q): Straight to the point, do you know about your future for the next year?
Marco Bezzecchi (MB): ‘No’.
Q: How do you see the apocalyptic silly season that is happening, with 18 riders not having the contract for the next year and the rumors about it?
MB: ‘I don’t care, to be honest. I care about myself, not about the other 17 riders’.
Q: It seems you are more comfortable on your bike now that we are arriving to Barcelona. What are your prospects for Barcelona in terms of qualifying and race?
MB: ‘Yeah, in the last couple of rounds I fortunately made some steps in terms of speed. In Jerez I achieved the podium, but also in Le Mans I was fast. I made two mistakes in the Sprint and in the GP, so it was a difficult weekend to me to forget. But arriving in Montmeló is very good because I like the track, it’s an incredible track, and hopefully we can continue the progress that we have made until now. So, yeah, I feel very good to be here’.
Q: Do you think the championship is still very open – that you can still be one of the contenders for the first positions?
MB: ‘At the moment is difficult, but, you know. Everything can happen, of course. My target… I’m not looking too much at it, I just want to be fast, so my target is to be fast race by race and try to improve’.
Q: What was the best and the worst moment of your career so far?
MB: ‘My best, for sure my first win in MotoGP, it was a very good moment, something that I was dreaming about since when I was a kid. The worst? Probably my first year in Moto2, which was really tough, really difficult. I wasn’t very fast and I was also crashing a lot, so it was a tough period for me, but fortunately I was able to go forward and arrive until now’.
Q: Do you have any special object that you take with you to every race?
MB: ‘Yes, my Rubik Cube’.
Q: How do you think new bikes and regulations will affect your ride?
MB: ‘The new rules? I don’t know. It will be an important change, very interesting. The thing that makes me more interested is the engine, which will be smaller. I’m very curious about the engine. Also without the devices will be interesting, because I never tried the bike without the devices, so for me will be the first time. I think it can be a good opportunity to improve the show, but honestly also this year the show very good, so I don’t know’.
Q: And do you think that the regulations are not the same for all the riders on the track? Like, somebody makes a mistake and it’s okay, and the other one makes the same mistake and it’s not okay.
MB: ‘Well, it’s difficult to judge, because in our sport there are many, many different situations that can happen. So the stewards are in a difficult position. Sometimes the measurement of judge is not the same, but I understand because it’s very difficult to take a decision in motorbike sports because of many different situations. So I think that the stewards are in a difficult position, but they are trying to do their best’.
Q: What’s your favourite food after the race weekend?
MB: ‘Well, I like typical Italian food, of course. Where I come from, the food is very good, so fortunately I always eat very good. When I finish a weekend, I like to go to a McDonald’s’.
