The event is a true trip back in time for anyone on the track, with its sights, sounds, and smells. The racing? Sure, there were some fast laps, but these cars will never be unleashed with the same intensity as their original drivers. Many of these cars were driven by the greatest legends of Formula 1. The Free Practice sessions took place on Friday.
It was a mix of joy and disappointment for Emerson Fittipaldi when he left the championship-winning McLaren team at the end of the 1975 season to join his brother’s Copersucar-sponsored team. They had a lucrative financial deal with a Brazilian sugar cooperative. However, the lack of results left a bitter taste in Emmo’s mouth. The car was designed by Brazilian engineer Richard Divila, who had a long-standing relationship with the Fittipaldi brothers. In hindsight, Fittipaldi would later refer to leaving McLaren as the biggest mistake of his life. His replacement, James Hunt, went on to win the championship in 1976.
Ferrari ace and Le Mans legend Jacky Ickx is seen signing a miniature Ferrari, affectionately known as the Prancing Horse. The Belgian driver once commented that confusion at Ferrari is a constant state. Ickx claimed his first Grand Prix victory in the rain at Rouen in 1968, a race marked by the tragic death of Jo Schlesser in a fiery accident with a Honda. Ickx won the Le Mans 24 Hours race six times and also claimed victory in the 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally driving a Mercedes.
Sponsorship in Formula 1 takes on various forms, from Samsonite luggage to Nigerian scams. Some sponsors even catch the eye of the most casual F1 enthusiasts, like Penthouse Rizla and Durex. These sponsors definitely stand out, no pun intended.
The Canadian oil magnate Walter Wolf was initially a partner of Frank Williams before launching his own team. The team debuted at the 1977 Argentine Grand Prix with a car designed by Dr. Harvey Postlethwaite. Their South African driver, Jody Scheckter, secured a victory in his first race. Scheckter recently auctioned off the Ferrari he drove during his championship-winning season in 1979 at this year’s Monaco Historique. Interestingly, it was Wayne Taylor who took the wheel of the car during this weekend’s event.
Ayrton Senna made a big impact at the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, driving a Toleman-Hart turbo. Starting from 13th position on the grid, it was only his fifth race. Despite the challenging circumstances, Senna managed to reach second place and was quickly closing in on the race leader, Alain Prost, when the race was prematurely stopped. Due to regulations, only half points were awarded, securing the victory for Senna but costing him the championship by half a point to his McLaren teammate, Niki Lauda, known for his cunning tactics.
