Lucio Cecchinello, a staunch loyalist of Honda, has recently shared his insights about the current dynamics within the Honda MotoGP team. Despite the challenges faced by the RC213V, which many riders describe as a significant hurdle, Cecchinello has remained faithful to Honda. This loyalty was evident when he declined an offer from KTM, which would have allowed him to move away from the problematic RC213V.
However, Cecchinello’s allegiance to Honda doesn’t mean he’s oblivious to the internal workings of the HRC (Honda Racing Corporation). He has been candid about the situation, reinforcing Alex Rins’ decision to move away from the Honda banner.
Cecchinello’s LCR team showcased its significance to Honda’s MotoGP project when Alex Rins clinched a remarkable victory at the Grand Prix of the Americas. This win is likely the only accolade Honda will boast in the 2023 MotoGP season. In return for this achievement, Rins received minimal acknowledgment, prompting the former Suzuki rider to switch allegiances. Rins has now signed a two-year contract with Yamaha as an official rider.
Meanwhile, KTM approached Cecchinello, hoping to lure him away from the challenges at Honda. However, the Italian team leader chose to remain with Honda.
Discussing the 2024 season dynamics with Todocircuito, Cecchinello highlighted the challenges faced by satellite teams. He noted, “In the satellite team, Alex Rins found himself with fewer engineers around him, which made him feel less significant.”
He further elaborated on the situation, stating, “The reality is that Honda found itself in a position where, to save and maintain their relationship with Marc Marquez, they had to give 110% to provide him with all the support. As a result, all the upgrades were channeled to Marquez. Rins felt he was perhaps in a subordinate position, which he didn’t appreciate.”
Cecchinello expressed his surprise at Rins’ decision to leave the satellite team at the end of the season. He admitted he hadn’t anticipated Rins’ move to Yamaha, especially since he believed Toprak Razgatlioglu would be the one joining Yamaha. However, with Franco Morbidelli’s departure opening up a slot, Rins’ decision to join a factory team that offered better compensation seemed logical.
In conclusion, Lucio Cecchinello emphasized the complexities of team dynamics and rider preferences, highlighting the challenges and decisions that shape the MotoGP landscape.
