After his seventh place in 2023, amassing 150 points, Alonso López is already looking ahead to this new season in the Moto2 world championship.
‘The truth is that I’m very happy with how the test day went, because I felt very good on my Boscoscuro with the new Pirelli tyres. This new way of riding suits my style. I went on holiday with energy for the coming season. The work done last season was very good. I expected more, I won’t hide it, but a series of circumstances meant that I wasn’t further ahead in the standings. [Fermín] Aldeguer was very good, he rode a great final straight’ said López, in an interview with Motosprint quoted by Motosan.
His teammate at Boscoscuro, Aldeguer, was third in the last edition of the world championship in the intermediate speed category.
‘Our problem was that when we were doing badly on a circuit, there were 26 bikes that could beat us. And when the situation was reversed, we only had two bikes in front of us, mine and Aldeguer’s, and the best of the Kalex riders might have finished third. In Germany, for example, we finished fifth and that was a very good result, but in the end it was only fifth place. In 2023, there was a period of learning and improvement’ he said.
The young rider also recalled his first Moto2 triumph at Misano in 2022: ‘I won my first race at Misano, when there were ten laps to go, I was already getting chicken skin, I was feeling hot and I had a one-second lead, which was very small. With one mistake, I could have lost, and when I crossed the finish line, I felt spectacularly relaxed’.
Like almost all young people, the dream of MotoGP is to fulfil a short career:
– There’s that idea, but I’d like to fight for a world championship, I don’t know if I’d make that move at all costs, if I’m offered a very good bike, with good conditions, obviously I’d take it, because I think I can be very competitive. In MotoGP, the level is much higher, but it’s easier to go fast, so everything is much more balanced.
Finally, he spoke about the references that guide him: ‘I loved the way Casey Stoner rode and he still inspires me today. I’d like to see him ride again. I haven’t had the chance to speak to him much, only in 2022 at Phillip Island, when he congratulated me after a victory. I’m very good friends with both Álex and Marc and now that they live in Madrid we sometimes get together. Marc is a reference point to watch and analyse’.
