It was announced on Wednesday that Freddie Spencer will step down as Chairman of the MotoGP Stewards Panel at the end of this season. The role will be taken over by Simon Crafar in 2025, with commissioners Andrés Somolinos and Tamara Matko remaining in place.
The former American rider has faced ongoing criticism from riders and teams during his tenure. It has been about five years with challenges, particularly with the consistency of decisions, which has always been under intense scrutiny.
In a statement, Spencer said: ‘It’s been a pleasure to have been the first Chairman of the panel, and to have worked to put in place the incredible people and procedures we have now. When I was asked to be the Chairman, I accepted as I wanted to contribute to the sport and I’m proud of my tenure’.
As he leaves his current role, the American is confident that he has a good successor in Crafar and looked ahead to his own future: ‘I’m looking forward to some exciting projects in the future, and I know the team will be in great hands with Simon’.
