After a few more challenging Grands Prix, Enea Bastianini savored a second-place finish at his home MotoGP Italian GP. The Ducati rider overtook Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati) near the end and finished only behind his teammate Francesco Bagnaia.
The Italian who secured second place said in a press conference: ‘It was a really difficult race, but I’m really happy because it was important for me to do a great result because it has been a really difficult period for me. We weren’t lucky during this part of the season, but today this result has arrived’.
Being overtaken by Marc Márquez (Gresini/Ducati) made Bastianini react, and in the last lap, he saw Martín as a target and took a risk for a very satisfying result: ‘When Marc overtook me, I closed a little bit the eyes and I pushed a little bit more. I tried to overtake him again. And in the last lap I saw Jorge not really close to me, but he could be my target and at the last corner I tried to do the maximum. I was with much more speed in the middle of the corner. I’m really happy for myself, but also for the guys because my bike today was really good and I was enjoying a lot’.
Asked if he could have fought with Bagnaia for the win if he had been faster in the first laps, the #23 replied: ‘I think Pecco today was really fast. We tried to catch him many times, me and Jorge. He was very close to him, but if you try to push a little bit more, sometimes you make some mistakes and you lose time. And also we suffered a lot with the front tyre. It wasn’t easy. In the last part of the race usually I can do something more. I can’t explain this. Probably was possible, probably no. I don’t know’.
