Iván Ortolá set the pace at the start of the Moto3 World Championship season. The rider was the fastest in the only free practice session of the category at the Qatar Grand Prix, in Losail.
After the first laps, the Spanish rider from MT Helmets-MSi was already at the top of the timesheets. After being surpassed by José Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo), Ortolá returned to the lead, where he remained for much of the session until he was overtaken by David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports/KTM) after half an hour.
Rueda reclaimed the lead, but towards the end Ortolá beat him by 0.168s when he set the best time of the session: 2m04.205s. Muñoz finished third ahead of David Alonso (CFMoto Aaspar), while Tatsuki Suzuki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) completed the top five.
