Last year, Jorge Martín was one of the strongest MotoGP riders, and despite being in the Prima Pramac satellite team, he fought for the title until the end with Francesco Bagnaia – who had been the champion the previous year. Jorge Lorenzo has no doubts that his compatriot could again be one of the riders to watch this year.
The former rider told the official MotoGP website that Martín made clear progress in 2023: ‘For sure Jorge made a big step forward from 2022 to 2023. He prepared himself much more to be stronger, he worked a lot in the pre-season of the last year and he demonstrated it on the track: he was much more consistent, he didn’t have these up and downs that pursued him for the first two years in MotoGP. He was the runner-up, he fought for the championship until the last race’.
Martín ultimately did not win the title, and Lorenzo has a possible explanation… considering that there is something the #89 must learn: ‘I think he couldn’t get it because the experience and maybe he was so emotional, a little bit overconfident – especially in the Indonesian GP for example, where he crashed when he was leading with a 3-second advantage. So in some circumstances he still needs to find out the way to keep more calm and to be more cold, and don’t be so hot, because one little mistake costs you many, many points and can make you lose the championship. If he learns to manage the situation, he can be very dangerous for Pecco and for the rest of the riders this year’.
