The MXGP and MX2 qualifying races for the MXGP of Flanders in Lommel took place this afternoon. Jorge Prado (MXGP) and Kay de Wolf (MX2) led the way starting this round of the Motocross World Championship.
In the MXGP class, Prado (Red Bull GasGas) took the lead on the first lap and never relinquished it. For about half of the race, Tim Gajser (Team HRC) was his pursuer, but the Slovenian was eventually overtaken by Jeffrey Herlings.
The Red Bull KTM rider put up a strong fight against Prado but could not catch him. The Spaniard won the race with a 1.078s advantage. Gajser finished third, followed by Calvin Vlaanderen (Monster Energy Yamaha) and Kevin Horgmo (Team Ship to Cycle Honda) in the top five.
In MX2, De Wolf (Nestaan Husqvarna) led the qualification race almost from start to finish, securing a dominant victory. Simon Längenfelder (Red Bull GasGas) was the main contender early on.
However, the German lost second place to Lucas Coenen (Nestaan Husqvarna) on the second lap and was unable to regain it. Consequently, Coenen finished second, 6.539s behind the winner. Längenfelder came in third, 42.429s off the lead, with Rick Elzinga (Monster Energy Yamaha) in fourth and Liam Everts (Red Bull KTM) in fifth.
