One of the most reputable engineers in MotoGP is Gigi Dall’Igna. Since joining Ducati, he has been a cornerstone of the success for the Borgo Panigale manufacturer, and it’s no surprise if rivals covet him. However, at KTM, the Italian was never seen as an option.
This was confirmed by director Hubert Trunkenpolz to GPOne.com: ‘Honestly, we never considered such a move. It’s also hard for me to imagine Gigi Dall’Igna considering leaving Ducati. It would be somewhat embarrassing from his perspective if he took this path. At KTM, we never discussed such a move or such an idea’.
Despite acknowledging Dall’Igna’s work, Trunkenpolz also asked whether the Italian engineer’s success with Ducati could be replicated in a different type of team:
– No one doubts the fact that Gigi is a genius engineer and a very successful team leader. There’s no need to discuss these facts. His signature is clearly present on Ducati bikes. The question is, would he be able to achieve the same success in a different environment? I am completely honest when I say: we haven’t thought about approaching Gigi Dall’Igna.
