The World Supersport 300 Championship title will be decided this Sunday in Portimão, in the season’s final race. Jeffrey Buis could have clinched the title in Saturday’s race but was penalized. Mirko Gennai secured the win.
José Luis Pérez González (Accolade Smrz Racing BGR/Kawasaki) had a good start from pole position but was overtaken by Buis (MTM Kawasaki) in the first corner.
Still in the first lap, Matteo Vannucci (AG Motorsport Italia Yamaha) briefly took the lead, but it was short-lived as Gennai (Team BrCorse/Yamaha) climbed to the top for the first time. Meanwhile, Buis had to serve a Long Lap penalty for an infraction in the free practice sessions and dropped out of the top ten… where he returned on the fourth lap.
The battle for the top positions remained intense and closely fought among several riders, with constant changes in the lead. Pérez González was in the front when, on the final lap, a red flag was shown due to a crash in turn four involving Jose Manuel Osuña Saez (Deza-Box 77 Racing Team/Kawasaki).
However, the results were based on the last time-keeping point that each rider had crossed. Therefore, the winner was Gennai, 0.142s ahead of his teammate Marco Gaggi. Pérez González completed the podium ahead of Vannucci, with Dirk Geiger (Freudenberg KTM Paligo Racing) in fifth. Buis recovered to seventh but still received a one-position penalty for reckless riding and finished eighth.
Nevertheless, the Dutch rider is on the verge of the title, holding a 22-point lead over Pérez González with 25 points up for grabs. Therefore, the Spanish rider must win and hope that his rival finishes no higher than 14th in the second race.
