More than 400 drivers were fined for improper use of the mobile phone while driving as part of the campaign “At the wheel, the mobile phone can wait,” which took place from November 28 to December 4, according to a statement released this Tuesday by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR).
The campaign, carried out by ANSR, the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the Public Security Police (PSP), aimed to alert drivers to the serious consequences of handling the mobile phone while driving.
During the operations of the Security Forces, 47,766 vehicles were physically inspected in Portugal, with a total of 10.9 thousand infractions recorded, 427 of which were related to improper use of the mobile phone while driving.
During the campaign period, a total of 2,937 accidents were recorded, resulting in 6 fatalities, 38 serious injuries, and 814 minor injuries. Compared to the same period in 2022, there were 244 more accidents, 1 fewer fatalities, 13 more serious injuries, and 94 more minor injuries.
A total of 354 drivers and passengers were sensitized during the campaign to the risk of handling the mobile phone while driving, in order to contribute to the reduction of the risk of accidents and the adoption of safer behaviors by drivers.
