FIA F1 Stewards hold Verstappen responsible for collision with Norris
The FIA F1 Stewards of the Austrian Grand Prix have provided their analysis of the collision between Verstappen and Norris. According to their findings, Verstappen, in Car 1, veered to the left before turning, resulting in a collision with Norris in Car 4. As a result, the Stewards determined that Verstappen is primarily responsible for the incident and imposed a penalty accordingly.
Norris and Verstappen, who previously shared a bond of respect and friendship off the track, found themselves in a collision while battling for the lead in Spielberg. This unfortunate event undoubtedly strained their relationship. Verstappen’s actions caused Norris to retire from the race, while the World Champion managed to recover, go to the pits, and finish in fifth place.
Unfortunately, what could have been a first and second place for the two “friends” was thwarted by Verstappen’s decision, denying both the opportunity for victory. This outcome is likely more disheartening for Norris.
Undoubtedly, Norris was disappointed after a disappointing afternoon that had so much potential. In an interview with Sky F1, the Englishman expressed his disappointment, stating, “I have no words to describe it. I’m just disappointed, nothing more.”
Norris also delved deeper, acknowledging that it was a good race and that he expected a fair and intense battle. However, the result did not align with his expectations. He emphasized that he had driven a race without errors and had given his best.
During the duel, Norris communicated Verstappen’s zigzag tactics over the radio. Unfortunately, these complaints were not heard and ultimately led to a collision. Norris highlighted the rule that prohibits reacting to another driver’s movements, which Verstappen violated three times. Norris managed to avoid the first two times, but on the third occasion, Verstappen collided with him. Norris believes that Verstappen’s actions not only ruined his own race but also affected Norris’ chances of success. Despite giving his best, Norris acknowledges that it was not enough to secure the victory, but he also states that the fault is not his.
In response to Verstappen’s questionable tactics, Norris stated, “There are rules, and if they are not followed, there is nothing I can do about it. My job was to focus on my race, drive fast, and do what I did today, even if it was not enough for a win.”
Norris expressed his determination to continue his current efforts and improvements, highlighting his satisfaction with the team and their collective work. However, he acknowledged feeling disappointed in this specific occasion.
Regarding his often mentioned “friendship” with Verstappen, Norris stated that his level of respect for the Dutch driver would depend on his response to the incident. If Verstappen denies any wrongdoing, Norris will lose a significant amount of respect. On the other hand, if Verstappen admits to making a mistake and acting recklessly, Norris will only lose a small amount of respect. Norris emphasized his fair approach during the race and criticized Verstappen for not reciprocating.
The McLaren team boss, Andrea Stella, offered an elegant response to Verstappen’s actions at the Red Bull Ring, suggesting that the whole world witnessed the incident and knows who is to blame, except for a few individuals.
