Introducing the winner of the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing, followed by Lando Norris from McLaren in second place and Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes in third place.
P: Max Verstappen, congratulations on your 61st victory. You continue to dominate in Spain with your third consecutive win. It was a challenging race for you.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Thank you. I think the key to the race was the start. I took the lead on the second lap and that gave me an advantage. After that, it was a defensive race as Lando and McLaren were very fast, especially towards the end of each stint. But we executed our strategy well and it worked out. It was a close race, but I’m happy to win here.
P: This victory must mean a lot to you, considering it’s where you got your first win in 2016. And the start of the Grand Prix was quite eventful, with George Russell overtaking you and Lando Norris. Can you tell us about that?
MV: Yes, I had to push a bit on the straight and go onto the grass, which cost me some momentum. So we entered Turn 1 quite late, but I was determined to take the lead. Once in front, I was able to manage my tires better, which helped me secure the win.
P: You mentioned some inconsistencies in the middle part of the race, including a slide at Turn 7. How close were you to the limit throughout the race?
MV: Tire management was crucial due to the high-speed corners, which caused a lot of sliding. It was a tire management race.
P: Congratulations on second place, Lando. It seems like you believe you could have won this race. Can you tell us what went wrong?
Lando NORRIS: Yes, I should have won. I had a bad start, which cost me. The car was amazing today, and I believe we were the fastest. But that mistake at the beginning ruined everything. I know I can work on it for next time, though. Overall, it was a good race and I am grateful to the team.
P: Despite not winning, you had a brilliant weekend, including a pole position. How do you feel about your performance?
LN: Despite the start, I was satisfied with my performance. I need to review what went wrong and improve for next time. We have some great tracks ahead, and I am excited to continue with a good performance.
P: Lewis Hamilton, it’s great to see you back on the podium. It has been a while since your last podium in Mexico last year. How does this result boost your confidence?
Lewis HAMILTON: Thank you. It was a good day and a good weekend for us. I want to thank the team for their hard work. The strategy and pit stops were perfect. I had a bad start, which cost me positions, but we fought back. With a better start, we could have been closer to the front. We are building momentum, and I hope we can challenge more in the upcoming races.
P: Strategy played an important role today, and you opted for a different tire strategy than your teammate George Russell. Can you tell us about that decision?
LH: It was our plan from the beginning to go with the Soft, Medium, Soft tire strategy. The Hard tire was not an option for me. The strategy worked well for us.
P: You had some intense battles on the track, including one with Carlos Sainz. Can you describe that moment?
LH: All the overtakes were close but fair. I gave him space, and we had a slight touch, but nothing serious. It was a good battle.
P: Max, you mentioned that you had to drive at 101% to compensate for the lack of pace. How was that from your point of view?
MV: It was challenging. We are a bit behind in terms of absolute pace, and we struggled with tire degradation at the end of each stint. But we did everything right and managed to win the race.
P: Lando, you mentioned that the differences between McLaren and Red Bull are small. How important are these incremental steps in reducing the gap?
LN: The differences are small, and it is crucial to eliminate mistakes and make the right decisions. We have the potential to win races, and we just need to put it all together.
P: Max, do you think Mercedes and Lewis can pose a challenge later in the season?
MV: That depends on the improvements each team brings to their cars. I can only focus on our team and try to optimize our package to stay ahead.
P: Lewis, you mentioned that you are struggling in qualifying. What do you think is the key to improving your results?
LH: Our car is unstable and unbalanced, which affects our performance in qualifying. We need to adjust the setup and improve tire management to extract more performance.
P: Lando, considering your team’s performance and development, do you think you can fight for the world championship this year?
LN: It’s possible. We have the potential, but we need to prevent Max from winning and eliminate mistakes. We are confident in our abilities and will continue to fight.
P: Lewis, considering Mercedes’ progress, does that make you reconsider your decision to go to Ferrari next year?
LH: No, not at all. I have a deep connection with Mercedes, and I will always support them. My focus is on finishing strong with Mercedes this year and contributing to their journey next year.
P: Lando, how did you feel when you were approaching Max with the Medium tires in the second stint and after overtaking George Russell?
LN: I felt good and comfortable in the car. I was confident in my pace and knew how to extract the maximum from it. It was a good battle, and I expected to close the gap even further.
P: Max, do you think McLaren and Lando are a close challenge for Red Bull, considering their past successes at this track?
MV: McLaren is doing a great job, and they have a strong car. We need to find more performance to stay comfortably ahead. It’s not just about past records; it’s about continuous improvement.
