Less than two weeks ago, Raúl Fernández had a dramatic crash at the beginning of the first day of MotoGP testing in Sepang. The details of his injuries have now been revealed: he suffered three fractures, which forced him to sit out the rest of the tests. He will now return in Losail and acknowledges the work of the championship’s medical team.
The Spanish rider from Trackhouse Racing commented: ‘I feel very, very lucky after the big crash that I had in Sepang. The doctor saw that I have three different fractures. It’s not funny’.
Speaking about the details of his injuries suffered, while ensuring that he is fit to ride safely in the Losail tests: ‘I have two on the pelvis, one on the hip. Honestly I feel more or less good. Another thing is that I did a CAT scan before taking the plane to come here and we saw it is safe for me and for everybody. It is the first thing. If they saw that it is not safe or I can break more if I crash, for sure I wouldn’t be here. But we saw that it’s safe, for sure, for me and for the rest. But that is clear, if it wasn’t safe I wouldn’t be here. Also tomorrow I have to do the check control. Anyway I did also in Madrid with the same doctor, he told me I’m fit to do the tests. I have to do here again, but if I took the plane and I moved all my team is because I can. That is clear’.
The #25 also praised the MotoGP doctors, after doubts arose in the switch from the Mobile Clinic to Quirónprevención: ‘I feel that MotoGP in some moments do an amazing job. What they did with the Clinica, everybody was in a really confused moment when they said that we would not have Clinica and they changed after a lot of years and Quirón came with all the team. It was amazing; I think all the riders are really happy with them. In my case, I don’t have the words to dedicate to them, especially to Jaime [Benito] and Nacho [Gallego], the physio and the doctor. The team that they have is amazing’.
Fernández then added: ‘The job that they did is amazing. I feel very good, because honestly the crash was less than two weeks ago and honestly I can walk, I can more or less go on the bicycle, so I feel that the recovery is quite fast. Normal people need four or five weeks minimum to be here, and in less than two I will jump on a MotoGP bike. It is not easy. I have to say thanks to them’.
