/ Alex Riberas, from Aston Martin Vantage #23 of Heart of Racing, considered his recent victory in the thrilling Six Hours of Glen event as one of the proudest moments of his career.
The sixth round of the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship marked the first win of the season for Riberas and Ross Gunn, who compete as the #23 duo.
It was also their second GTD Pro victory at Watkins Glen International circuit, and Riberas’ seventh win in his 50 career races.
During the post-race press conference, Riberas expressed his thoughts, stating: “I mean, this race never fails to provide an exciting spectacle. This edition was no different.
“From the start, we could tell it was going to be a chaotic race, where survival would be the key factor, especially in the middle part where there were several opportunities for things to go wrong.
“Today, I can confidently say it’s one of my proudest victories because it truly was a team effort.”
After Gunn secured third place in qualifying, he started the race with a strong pace, while the GTD Pro order remained relatively unchanged in the early laps.
Midway through the race, when rain made a brief appearance, the #23 duo dropped to fifth position, behind the two Corvettes and Paul Miller Racing’s BMW M4 GT3 #1, which showed better pace and consistency.
When rain returned in the final hour, it caused a red flag due to its intensity, causing many drivers on slick tires to struggle to maintain their speed and slide off the track and towards the barriers.
At the moment of the red flag, car #23 was in ninth place and decided to stay on slick tires. The parc fermé rules were applied during the red flag period, preventing teams from changing tires, if desired.
As the track dried and the circuit sweepers removed the standing water, a yellow flag allowed the competitors to enter the pits to refuel before a 16-minute race to the finish line.
Gunn remained on the track and battled for the lead with Tommy Milner (#3 Corvette), who realized that Milner was saving fuel in turns 1 and 9 under pressure from Gunn.
Milner eventually entered the pits one lap before the checkered flag to refuel, ending the intense battle.
Riberas added: “We faced setbacks and made mistakes along the way. I believe it’s not the first mistake that really matters, but rather the second and third mistakes.
“Today, we didn’t let the initial mistake determine our fate for the rest of the race. We stayed united as a team. There was no finger-pointing or panic. Our focus remained on controlling what we could control and maximizing our performance.
“In the end, this decision had a significant impact on the race result.
“With luck on our side, we found ourselves in Victory Lane, which is truly amazing.
“Especially for Ross, who is in the championship hunt, today’s result was crucial for the remainder of the season.”
