Daniel Ricciardo, the Australian driver from RB, celebrated his exceptional performance in the qualifying round of the Canadian Grand Prix. This comes after facing criticism from Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 Formula 1 World Champion, regarding his performance this season compared to his teammate Yuki Tsunoda. Despite speculation about his future, Ricciardo showcased his skills at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, securing a spot among the top five. He finished just 0.178 seconds behind George Russell’s pole position time and outperformed Tsunoda, who finished eighth. When asked about the criticism, Ricciardo chose to ignore Villeneuve’s comments, stating that he does not pay attention to his negative remarks. He also expressed his frustration with Villeneuve’s constant criticism, suggesting that he may have suffered multiple head injuries. Ricciardo concluded by stating that he will not waste time on such people and will focus on his own performance.
Ricciardo reaffirmed his belief that his natural speed has not deserted him and that it all comes down to his ability to consistently access that speed.
“Well, I believe this year has not always been about whether I still possess the speed to perform,” he expressed.
“It’s more about consistency, which I have not been able to demonstrate week after week.
“So, it has definitely been more challenging, more than I anticipated, but I know the speed is there and it’s just a matter of accessing it. I mainly look at myself.
“While you are constantly trying to adjust the car, I feel it’s more about finding that ideal state within myself. And maybe 10 years ago, it was easier.”
“Maybe when you’re a kid, you just jump in and drive, but as you get older, there are more factors in your life that can potentially interfere.
“So it’s about recognizing that and making sure I approach the weekend with a clear mind and readiness.
“I mean, I was always going to be happy to come back here because it’s a track I love.
“And today marks the 10th anniversary, exactly 10 years today, June 8, since I got my first win.
“So there’s always a feeling of positivity associated with this place and coming back here, and I’ve made some adjustments since Monaco in an attempt to put it all together.
“So it’s great to achieve that today. We’ve been consistently quick throughout the weekend so far.”
Ricciardo, who finished fourth in the Miami Sprint last month, expressed his intention to take an aggressive approach in the race, rather than just focusing on defending his position.
Discussing his prospects in the race, Ricciardo predicted: “Well, the distance to turn one is quite short, so there’s a good chance of holding position.
“But considering the qualifying times, it’s quite balanced. So maybe we can progress and not worry about the cars behind. We’ll see.”
