Richard Petty and Lee Petty used retro designs on the track at Darlington. The 13th race of the 2024 Cup season took place last Sunday at Darling Raceway, and the highlight of the day was the nostalgic paint schemes used by teams to honor iconic figures in the sport. Among them, the retro scheme of car number 5 stood out as the most accurate of the day.
A fan recently asked the seven-time Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer about his thoughts on the retro weekend, especially when teams pay tribute to him, Lee, and Kyle. He expressed his belief that teams are running out of retro designs to show, as they have been doing it in Darlington for a long time.
The sponsorship issue also presents a challenge for the retro weekend. Teams struggle to have appropriate retro designs without the right sponsors, and some drivers are even forced to recreate their own past schemes. Despite these obstacles, Legacy MC co-owner fondly recalled the first time he drove his father’s car at 16. From that moment on, he never looked back and consistently performed well in Cup races due to his exceptional racing skills. The Petty family legacy will be forever etched in NASCAR history.
