My mistake was underestimating the incredible grip of the RB20. However, Max’s furious performance in the Sprint race revealed how much he was holding back. Despite a poor qualifying, he quickly closed the gap and overtook Hamilton with ease, showcasing his exceptional skills. He then disappeared into the distance, leaving his competitors behind.
The RB20 behaved like a dream, excelling in the corners and maintaining speed in the slow sections. Normally, this kind of performance would result in oversteer for other cars. To make matters worse, the RB20 also had great traction on exit, as if it had been designed for understeer.
Verstappen’s exceptional skills allowed him to take his performance to the next level. Unfortunately, his teammate couldn’t keep up with his talent. Although he may come close at times, he rarely reaches the same level.
Lando Norris made a rookie mistake trying to overtake Hamilton on the outside at the start of the Sprint race. Left behind by the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, he saw several cars pass him before he could rejoin the track. This cost him a place on the podium, wasting his impressive performance in qualifying.
However, Norris redeemed himself in the main race. He managed to extend the life of his tires, as well as Red Bull’s strategy, and kept Sergio Perez behind him. With the help of well-timed Safety Car interventions, he secured the second place he deserved. This performance showed his potential as a replacement in case Max decides to leave Red Bull for Mercedes. It is something that the management team will certainly take note of.
In the world of motorsport, while positioned at the back of the starting grid, Lance Stroll was actively solidifying his reputation. On this occasion, he did so by colliding with Daniel Ricciardo from behind, while driving under Safety Car conditions. To be fair, he was not the only one to make a mistake at the hairpin turn. However, unlike the others who managed to avoid contact, Stroll, also known as “Junior,” completed the task.
We might have been inclined to forgive him for his error. However, he proceeded to blame Ricciardo for the entire incident. In situations where it is evident that you are the problem, it is usually best to stay silent and accept responsibility. However, Lance chose to vocalize his thoughts, thus confirming that he is not yet ready to compete with the more experienced drivers. Nevertheless, the Stewards deemed it appropriate to penalize him with two points; one for his lack of attention and another which I can only assume is an attempt to deceive.
From the start, I had no doubts that Max Verstappen would emerge as the winner in this year’s F1 World Drivers’ Championship. Now, having witnessed the true capabilities of the RB20, my initial beliefs have been validated. With Perez seemingly mastering the car, it appears that the Constructors’ Championship is also an inevitable conclusion. This leaves Ferrari as my preferred candidate for second place, with only McLaren posing a potential challenge. It’s high time someone turned off the lights.
