Somkiat Chantra is turning heads at the Moto2 German GP. After finishing third in the free practice, the Thai rider set a new lap record to lead the first practice session this afternoon at Sachsenring.
After the first flying laps, Chantra (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia/Honda) was already at the top of the timesheets, holding the position for nearly half an hour until being surpassed by Fermín Aldeguer (MB Conveyors SpeedUp/Boscoscuro).
The Spaniard led for less than two minutes before being overtaken by Jake Dixon (CFMoto Polarcube Aspar/Kalex). The Brit couldn’t keep the lead, as Chantra quickly responded with a record lap that secured him the top spot: 1m22.698s, beating the Brit by 0.351s.
Aldeguer finished third, followed by Bo Bendsneyder (Preicanos Racing Team/Kalex) and Arón Canet (Fantic Racing/Kalex), rounding out the top five ahead of Marcos Ramírez (OnlyFans American Racing Team/Kalex), who had led the free practice. Championship leader Sergio García (MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro) finished seventh.
